Spain is well known by its tons of traditions and delicious dishes. It doesn’t matter if you are not in the country, its culinary culture goes beyond frontiers and, to make things better, beverages from this country also captivate people`s palate as well as food.
All started in the early Spain, when beverages enthusiasts put together a sort of exotic ingredients to create the perfect and most refreshing drink, Sangria.
Sangria is one of the most popular refreshing party drinks nowadays. It was introduced to the United States and then to the rest of the world in the early 60’s.
Traditional Sangria recipe
If you are here to learn how to prepare traditional sangria you are in the right place. Even though this drink is served and prepared in many ways, the result will always end in an energizing and refreshing experience. To prepare traditional sangria you need:
1/2 orange sliced into small pieces (rind on, important) Make sure to remove seeds removed (sometimes, people like to keep seeds for garnish)
1 bottle (750 ml) of dry red wine
1/2 skin on and cored apple chopped into pieces
3/4 cup of orange juice (add more to increase citrus taste)
1 cup of ice to cool the drink
4 Tablespoons of brown sugar (you can change it for 3 tablespoons of cane sugar)
1/3 cup of Brandy (you are free to add more)
A large pitcher
Once you have all the ingredients to prepare sangria, you are ready to proceed with the preparation:
Step 1: In a big and deep pitcher add all the chopped and sliced fruits (orange and apple) and the sugar. Then mix up everything with a wooden spoon (metal can add iron-taste to the drink) for one minute.
Step 2: In the same pitcher, add the brandy and orange juice. Make sure to mix them up for half on a minute. This will help the liquids acquire a little from the fruits taste.
Step 3. Add the sugar and mix it up for 30 seconds
Step 4: Get ready with the bottle of red wine. Add the recommended quantity and muddle to make it uniform. Immediately, taste it to check if it needs a little bit of more ingredients (specially sugar, wine, brandy, or orange juice)
Step 5. Then add some ice and mix it up to have the drink cold. Get some fancy cups or glasses and serve it.
Step 6. If there is some leftover from the drink, it is recommendable to store it at the refrigerator for 48 hours maximum.
This traditional sangria is mostly enjoyed alongside with strong dishes at lunch of even in the afternoon.
Special Sangria cocktail
There is an excellent variation of sangria drink which add a slightly exotic touch on its flavor. To prepare it, you will need the following components:
1 bottle of dry red wine
1 sliced pear
Half of an orange (sliced)
2 cinnamon sticks
1 sliced lime
Brandy (¼ cup)
Ginger ale (¾ cup)
Pomegranate seeds (½ cup)
Grand Marnier (¼ cup)
Agave nectar (¼ cup)
Here are the steps to follow to make the magic:
Step 1. Get a big enough pitcher and add the sticks of cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, grand marnier, pear, brandy, orange, agave nectar and lime. Mix all the ingredients up to combine.
Step 2. Empty the whole bottle of red wine.
Step 3. Cover the pitcher and put it in the refrigerator for two hours.
Step 4. Before serving the beverage, immediately add the ginger ale and some ice.
